Here’s What To Do…
As you’re getting all your documents together for your tax return, make sure to have your W-2. Your W-2 form shows what you made for the year and all the taxes that were withheld. This form is necessary for you to file an accurate tax return if you worked as an employee. You’ll want a W-2 form from all employers from the year if you worked multiple jobs.
If you haven’t received your W-2s by now, here’s some steps you can take:
First things first- get in touch with your employer and ask them for a copy. If they mailed it out, make sure that it was sent to the correct address.
If this doesn’t seem to work, you can call the IRS: 800-829-1040 for assistance. Here’s what you’ll need:
-Your name, address, social security number, and phone number
-Your employer’s name, address and phone number, along with the dates you worked there
-An estimate of how much you were paid and withheld taxes. You can use your last pay stub to calculate these amounts.
April 15, 2014 is the deadline for tax returns. If you still haven’t received your W-2 in time, you can use Form 4852- Substitute for Form W-2. It’s one page, and should be simple enough to complete if you have all the information. Try to be accurate when estimating your wages and withheld taxes.
If you still need more time, you can apply for an extension, giving you six more months to file. You can do this on the IRS website (IRS.gov) by using the IRS Free File, or by mailing form 4868- Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Tax Return. Be sure to apply no later than midnight on April 15.
