If you’ve read our article on tax scams, you’re aware of some of the common tactics used by frauds in attempt to steal your money.
Unfortunately scammers are still out there, and fraudulent tax activity has been increasing, causing the IRS to send out a warning. Read on to find out how you can stay safe this tax season.
We’ve mentioned previously that the IRS will not make their initial contact with you by email or phone. So, even if the caller ID appears that it’s from the IRS- be wary. Scammers today are able to make the phone number look like it’s coming from a government source. Names and addresses are easy to get online; tax frauds can go as far as using your online information and a fake title to trick you. Some have even been known to use the IRS letterhead in emails or postal mail to look legit.
Remember, all scammers are after the same thing: personal financial information. They will try many tactics to get you to hand over your money, including providing faulty addresses of banks or IRS offices where you can mail your payment. Never provide payment or personal information over the phone. Scammers routinely try to scare their victims into forking over their finances by threatening higher fees, arrest, and even deportation!
Common victims or tax scammers have been known to be the elderly, immigrants, and citizens with English as their second language. It may seem impossible to know what’s real and what’s not- especially when some frauds leave seemingly urgent calls from the IRS, or send faux emails with IRS contact phone numbers- but always keep in mind that the official IRS website is IRS.gov. Any domain ending differently is not to be trusted. Contact the Federal Trade Commission right away if you are a victim of an IRS tax scam.
